Mission

It is the goal and policy of the Forestville Union School District to educate students about nutrition, and to provide each student access to enjoyable and nutritious meals each day. The District endeavors to improve the health of the students and help them excel at learning through better nutrition and wellness. The District will provide health and wellness instruction to students in ways that establish and maintain life-long healthy eating habits. The District shall foster an understanding of nutrition in our students that will serve them throughout their lifetimes and will benefit our entire community as a result of the resultant good health. This mission shall be accomplished through student nutrition education, intelligent selection of the food served in school, and the core academic content in the classroom.

Nutrition Guidelines for Foods Available at School
The Board believes that food and beverages available to students at district should support the health curriculum and promote optimal health. Nutrition standards adopted by the district for all foods and beverages sold to students, including foods and beverages provided through the district’s food service program, student stores, fundraisers and other venues, shall include selections that meet or exceed state and federal nutrition standards.

The Superintendent or designee shall encourage school organizations to use healthy food items or non-food items for fundraising purposes when such fundraisers take place on campus during the school day until 3:00 p.m. The Superintendent and Principals also shall encourage school staff to avoid the use of non-nutritious foods as rewards for students’ academic performance, accomplishments, or classroom behavior.

School staff shall encourage parents/guardians or other volunteers to support the District’s nutrition education program by considering nutritional quality when selecting any snacks that they may send to school for the morning nutrition break/recess, and/or that they may donate for birthdays and occasional class celebrations.

Non-nutritious foods are considered those that:

1) Exceed 30% of calories from fat (e.g. donuts, fried foods, etc.)

2) Exceed 35% sugar by weight (e.g. sodas, sugared fruit juices, candy)

3) “Juices” with less than 25% juice.

Recommendations for class celebrations:

1) Class celebrations shall be held after the lunch period. On a limited basis and with prior approval of the school Principal (to comply with the National School Lunch Program regulations), curriculum-related nutritious breakfast events may be approved provided that they take place before or during morning recess (to ensure adequate time between the event and the lunch period).

2) Ensure that there are no foods or beverages at the celebration that do not meet nutritional standards (or at least no more than one food or beverage in that category).

Parents – in lieu of bringing a food celebration for birthdays please consider a small token to be given to each child. Items from the dollar store, bookmarks, a pack of crayons, stickers, pencils are just a few of the fun items all students can enjoy.
